In 1995, senior orthopedic surgeon Dr. Klaus Pastl discovered a way to fuse broken bones biologically.
A lifechanging opportunity that optimized patients healing process.

Dr. Pastl recognized that while traditional metal hardware has long played a vital role in surgery, there remained opportunities to enhance patient outcomes – particularly in cases where healing could be optimized, complications reduced, or secondary procedures avoided. He wanted more for his patients and envisioned a solution with maximizing the biomechanical properties that the body could gradually remodel over time. One that could support healing in challenging cases like non-unions or infections and potentially eliminate the need for removal surgeries. His goal was to give surgeons an additional tool in their daily practice – a natural option.

He asked a bold question:
What if we could fix bones with real bone?

Together with Dr. Pastl background in Orthopedics, his wife’s Dr. Eva Pastl’s medical knowledge, and with his son’s expertise in business, Lukas and Thomas Pastl, they founded Surgebright. A company built not just on innovation, but on compassion. At the heart of their mission was a revolutionary idea:

Use human bone to heal human bone.

From this vision came the Shark Screw® – a screw made entirely from 100% cortical human bone. It remodels into patient’s own tissue, becoming part of the body. Allografts are proven to be safe – supported by millions of grafts implanted every year – “as if the injury had never happened” (Sailer et al.  Journal of Orthopedics and Traumatology (2023) 24:6).

What started as a single surgeon’s dream quickly became a movement. Other physicians saw the power in this approach. They tested it, trusted it, and shared it. Surgebright became more than a company – it became a community of physician’s, driven by science, united by purpose.
